What is the difference between PLC gateway and a traditional industrial router

The relationship between gateway and routing is expressed as: gateway is the basis of network connection, and routing is the bridge of network connection. Today we will take a detailed look at the difference between the plc smart gateway and the traditional industrial router.

Gateway equipment is mainly used to connect two different networks. At the same time, the gateway can also communicate with the hosts on both sides at the same time. However, the hosts on both sides cannot communicate directly, and must pass through the gateway to communicate. The gateway's job is in the application layer. Simply put, the gateway is to manage the IP of different network segments. When we generally do VLAN on the switch, we need to make an IP under the default VLAN interface, and this IP is what we call the gateway.

Industrial routers are network-layer devices, and they usually send data in units of packets. The sub-interface of the router has the function of dividing the broadcast domain, so when we use the switch as a VLAN, we must make a three-layer routing on the router. And the IP address we set on the router's sub-interface is the gateway. Of course, in our most commonly used Ethernet, the gateway will be degenerated into a router.

   1. The concept of gateway/router is different

Gateway (Gateway) is also called network connector and protocol converter. The gateway realizes network interconnection above the network layer. It is the most complicated network interconnection device and is only used for the interconnection of two networks with different high-level protocols. The gateway can be used for both wide area network interconnection and local area network interconnection. A gateway is a computer system or device that serves as an important task for conversion. Used between two systems with different communication protocols, data formats or languages, or even completely different architectures, the gateway is a translator. Unlike a bridge that simply conveys information, the gateway repackages the received information to meet the needs of the destination system. Same layer-application layer.

Router (Router) is a device that connects to various local area networks and wide area networks in the Internet. It automatically selects and sets routes according to the channel conditions, and sends signals in the best path and in order. The router is the hub of the Internet, the "traffic police."

  2, different functions

A gateway is divided into a transmission gateway and an application gateway. The main role is to act as a transformation task. It is essentially an IP address from a network to other networks.

The main role of the router is to connect different networks and transmit information. According to the usage, it can be divided into: access, enterprise level, backbone level, terabit, multi-WAN and 4G/5G wireless, etc.

The gateway can be a router, a switch or a PC. To communicate within the same network segment, there is no need to intervene the gateway. Only when the host is communicating with a device other than this network segment, it is necessary to send all data packets to the gateway device, and then forward through the gateway device or There are routing processing and so on.

Router is a network layer system. Routers are generally divided into two categories in the current market. One is a single-protocol router and the other is a multi-protocol router. The router can convert the data format and become a necessary device different from the network interconnection between protocols.

PLC gateway supports 4G/3G/WIFI/PPPOE/WAN wired network, built-in various communication protocols (Modbus RTU/Modbus TCP, Siemens series, Omron series, Mitsubishi series, AB series, etc.) support remote custom configuration, remote deployment, gateway State monitoring and other technologies are integrated with an industrial-grade smart gateway embedded with a network operating system.

It is suitable as an access node for large-scale distributed equipment. The embedded protocol analyzer can first collect the field equipment data to the gateway node for calculation and analysis through protocol analysis, and then transmit it to the customer-defined MQTT through the MQTT Internet of Things protocol. The cloud platform is convenient for users to use advanced Internet of Things technology and integration of the two technologies to quickly build a set of efficient and high-concurrency industrial Internet systems and Industry 4.0 service platforms.
